David Staal brings passion, leadership, and experience to any role in which he serves. Currently, he leads a national team as Senior Director of Philanthropy for Bethany Christian Services. From 2019-2020, David worked as the Interim Executive Director / Consultant at a small Illinois-based nonprofit to help a friend re-engineer her struggling organization. Prior to that assignment, he served for 11 years as CEO of Kids Hope USA, a national organization with a Michigan headquarters. While there, Kids Hope USA experienced tremendous national growth, opened five regional offices, and added a customer support center. However, his most treasured moments came every week volunteering as a mentor meeting with elementary-aged students.

Before his non-profit organization experience, David held leadership positions at Willow Creek Community Church (South Barrington, IL), first as communications director / media spokesperson and then as Promiseland Director (children's ministry). During his ten years at Willow Creek, David developed as an author and speaker domestically and internationally. For 12 years, he served as a senior editor / columnist for Christianity Today International, followed by three years in a similar role for Ministry Matters (United Methodist Church). Read over 150 columns and watch short videos by David at Christianity Today or at Ministry Matters.
David started in ministry for Willow Creek following a 13-year corporate business career. Most of that time he worked for Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Park, IL) in marketing and product development – highlighted by receiving two U.S. patents for innovative system design.

A graduate of Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), David holds a degree in communications. He also received professional certification in innovation leadership from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business (Hanover, NH).

While his work matters, his family matters far more. In 2019, David and Becky celebrated their 30th anniversary. Becky has worked on several church staffs and started her own team culture/personal development business (beckystaal.com) following a corporate career. The two met at Purdue while leading the Old Masters program. They have two adult children. Scott serves as a multi-area director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He and David co-authored Show Up: Student Edition. Erin teaches Kindergarten and coaches high school tennis.
